Meeting on Wednesday, the coordinators of the political groups in the European Parliament decided not to include a debate with a resolution on the political situation in Serbia in the April agenda, despite concerns that a sonic cannon was used during the March 15 peaceful protest in Belgrade, the European Western Balkans portal reported.
The proposal to include this topic in the debate was submitted by the Liberals and the Greens in the European Parliament and was supported by the Socialists & Democrats and the Left. The European People's Party (EPP) and the far-right groups were against.
Before that, MEPs from the EPP refused to sign a letter sent by 31 MEPs to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, voicing concern over her meeting with Serbian President Aleksandar Vucic amid Serbia's political crisis.
The Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) is an associate member of the EPP group, and Vucic is one of its founders.
On Tuesday, the Serbian President met in Brussels with European Council President Antonio Costa and Ursula von der Leyen, describing the talks as cordial, substantive and open.
Serbian media quoted Vucic as saying that the conversation focused on Serbia's strategic path. He said Serbia is absolutely committed to the European path and a decision will be made very soon on the formation of a new government or holding elections.
