site.btaMore Expensive Eggs, Cheaper Lamb in Romania for Easter

A little over a month before Easter, the price of eggs, which are traditionally painted for the holiday, may increase by 10% in Romania due to the bird flu crisis, reported the Romanian national television TVR.
A BTA check shows that currently in large supermarket chains a box with 10 eggs is sold at prices between RON 9.49 (BGN 3.79) and RON 14.99 (BGN 5.99). A box with 30 eggs is 22.90 (BGN 9.16).
“The selling price in Romania is quite low. We are currently in third place in terms of the lowest price in Europe. We have a pretty good production, because Romania is now in the top 10 of European producers. Due to the bird flu, we started exporting eggs to other countries such as Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, France,” commented Florin Panfile, commercial director of the egg producer, quoted by TVR.
It is not yet clear how this will reflect on the prices of sweet Easter bread, but such are already being sold in retail chains, BTA found out. For the moment, prices vary between RON 16.99 and RON 19.99 (BGN 6.79 and BGN 7.99). Starting this year, Easter bread for vegans is also available on the market at the price of RON 19.99. It is preservative-free, and yeast and natural yeast are used to make it.
As for lamb, the expectations are that it will be cheaper this year. The reason is the embargo imposed on exports after the discovery of a plague outbreak in Bihor County.
The price per kilogram is expected to be around RON 22 (8.80 BGN). Farmers point out that given the difficulties caused by the plague on small ruminants, this price is fair, without affecting the budget of the hosts.
