The number of pensioners in Bulgaria in January 2025 was 2,054,848, an increase of 15,630 people or 0.8 percent compared to the same period of the previous year, the National Social Security Institute (NSSI) press service reported on Friday. The average monthly pension amounted to BGN 929.20, marking an increase of BGN 103.26 or 12.5% from the same period in 2024.

Nearly BGN 2 billion was spent on pensions from the Public Social Insurance (PSI) in January, a 13% increase from 2024.

The total amount of reported revenues under the consolidated budget of the PSI was BGN 1.1017 billion, an increase of BGN 140.6 million year-on-year.

The next largest group of expenditures in the consolidated budget of the PSI was the cost of cash benefits and allowances under the Social Security Code. They amounted to BGN 151.8 million in January 2025, while last year they were BGN 46.7 million more.

Teachers' Pension Fund

The total amount of revenue reported in the Teachers' Pension Fund budget for January 2025 was BGN 5.5 million, a BGN 400,000 increase compared to the same period last year.

Total reported expenditure on the Fund budget for January 2025 amounted to BGN 9.4 million. The expenditure incurred was BGN 1.5m more than January 2024.

Employees' Guaranteed Claims Fund

The reported revenue for January 2025 was BGN 600,000 or BGN 200,000 less compared to January 2024. Total reported expenditure for January 2025 amounted to BGN 400,000, or BGN 100,000 more compared to 2024.
