Representatives of the Buditeli civic initiative staged a protest against the adoption of the euro in front of the National Assembly on Wednesday.
Holding placards with messages such as "We don't want the euro," "People's Court for the Constitutional Court," and "The voice of the people is the voice of God," the demonstrators chanted "Step down now!" and "Bulgarians, stand strong!" as they gathered outside Parliament in the morning.
The protesters called for a national referendum to keep the Bulgarian lev. Security in the area was heightened, with increased police presence and gendarmerie units deployed around the National Assembly.
