Bulgaria's nuclear power industry generated 16,163 GWh of electricity in 2023, the Eurostat said on its website. This corresponds to a 2.6% share of electricity production from nuclear power plants in the EU, Eurostat data show.
In total, 40,255.5 GWh of electricity were generated in Bulgaria in 2023.
The 13 European Union countries with nuclear power plants (NPPs) operating on their territory produced 619,601 GWh of electricity from nuclear power. This represents an increase of 1.7% compared to 2022.
The electricity generated by nuclear power plants in these countries is equivalent to 22.8% of the total electricity generated in the EU in 2023.
The largest producer of electricity from nuclear power in the EU during this period is France. Its nuclear power plants generated 54.6% (338,202 GWh) of all electricity generated by nuclear power in the European Union. It was followed by Spain (56,873 GWh or 9.2%, Sweden (48,470 GWh or 7.8%) and Finland (34,308 GWh or 5.5%).
Germany produced 7,216 GWh of electricity in early 2023, after which the country's nuclear power plants were decommissioned in April. By 2021, Germany was EU's second-largest producer of electricity from nuclear power, Eurostat notes.
In 2023, France was the most dependent on nuclear power among EU countries. Nuclear power accounts for 65% of the country's total electricity generation. This was followed by Slovakia, where 62% of electricity was generated by nuclear power.he countries with NPPs in operation for all or part of 2023 that were least dependent on nuclear power were Germany (1.4%) and the Netherlands (3.3%).
