The Bulgarian Red Cross (BRC) has provided free humanitarian aid to support residents of Parcani, the largest Bulgarian village in Transnistria, Moldova, who are without gas and experience power outages for up to eight hours a day, the BRC said on Thursday.
As of January 1, 2025, the transit agreement for Russian natural gas through Ukraine has expired, leaving Transnistria facing an energy crisis. At end-2024, the Russian state energy corporation Gazprom announced it would stop gas exports to Moldova starting January 1, 2025, citing "unpaid obligations".
The request for assistance was received through a letter from Dr. Georgi Barbarov of Parcani. The donation will be delivered to the Bulgarian Community in the Republic of Moldova public association, registered in Chisinau.
The humanitarian aid includes essential supplies—wool blankets, bedding sets, pillows, clothes, and shoes. According to the BRC, the donation is intended for the most vulnerable groups: the elderly, people with disabilities, and large families, who have been without gas and facing limited electricity supply since February 1, 2025.
In Moldovan Taraclia District, which is home to over 60,000 Bulgarians, 65% of the population will receive a quarter of the aid sent by the BRC. The support was requested by Lazar Dermenji, Taraclia District Chairperson.
