The ProGlas civic initiative warns that the political crisis in Serbia, which started as a wave of social discontent over the tragedy in Novi Sad on November 1 with the collapse of the concrete canopy of the railway station, has reached its peak. According to ProGlas, the solution is the formation of a caretaker government that will guarantee fair and democratic parliamentary elections.
In a statement published on the ProGlas website, the civic initiative presents the idea of a caretaker government with a mandate of between three and ten months and a minimum number of ministries. According to ProGlas, the ministers should enjoy high public trust, authority and experience, and should commit to not standing as candidates in the next elections.
ProGlas notes that at the moment there is an outgoing government in Serbia, which the parliament has no way of confirming because no plenary session of the National Assembly has been scheduled for weeks and the country has reached a state of "maximum dysfunction of the entire system".
In its declaration, ProGlas points out that it was created as an organization to fight for a change of the system in Serbia, not for the occupation of any positions and functions, "which is why none of the initiators of the organization will be part of the caretaker government", the website of the civic initiative reads.
The opposition parliamentary party People's Movement of Serbia expressed support for the ProGlas declaration and also advocated the formation of a transitional government as a guarantor of fair and democratic elections.
The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vučić, is firmly opposed to a caretaker government.
The ProGlas citizens' initiative was established on November 7, 2023.
