The agricultural sector is responsible for about 4% of Bulgaria's GDP and provides 6% of employment in the country, said Agriculture and Food Minister Georgi Tahov at the opening of the 10th edition of Agra, Vinaria and Foodtech exhibitions in Plovdiv on Tuesday. Among the official guests were Mayor Kostadin Dimitrov, Regional Governor Prof Hristina Yancheva, Metropolitan Nikolay, Municipal Council Chair Atanas Uzunov.

Tahov noted that according to data from 2022 and 2023, investments in the sector reach over BGN 2.2 billion annually, which represents about 8% of all investments in the country's economy. In 2023, the Agriculture sector had a positive trade balance of EUR 1.7 billion, which exceeds that of 2022 by 9%, he stressed.

He pointed out that even though the sector has faced very serious difficulties in recent years, the agri-food chain has maintained its relative stability. "It is important that agriculture returns to its normal rhythm, for which the team of the Agriculture and Food Ministry is working purposefully. With many legislative changes in the sector, we are trying to create a more favourable regulatory environment where farmers feel more protected," Tahov emphasized.

He wished the participants at the exhibitions the creation of many new business contacts and pointed out that the three international exhibitions in Plovdiv form a megaforum for agribusiness and food, which is unparalleled in the Balkans.
