The State will provide greater support to universities that improve academic standards for students throughout their studies, Education Minister Krasimir Valchev said at a discussion with department heads, lecturers, and students at the University of National and World Economy (UNWE), the Ministry of Education and Science's press service reported here on Wednesday.
The event marked the first in a series of meetings aimed at implementing operational measures to improve the quality and reputation of Bulgarian universities.
"I want us to have an in-depth conversation about the quality of our higher education," Valchev said, stressing the need to raise academic expectations while also supporting lecturers. "Students should engage in learning throughout the year, not just from exam to exam," he added.
He noted that higher education is the only sector funded based on quality, and this approach will be strengthened. "Last year, additional funds were allocated for the first time based on quality assessments, and this will continue in the coming years," he said.
The Ministry is preparing changes to its programme for attracting foreign students, it was revealed during the meeting. "We will adjust the measures we fund to be more visible and proactive in markets where we can attract more international students," Valchev said. He added that best practices for promoting Bulgarian education abroad would be discussed with universities.
UNWE Rector Dimitar Dimitrov opened the meeting by expressing appreciation that the discussion series began at UNWE. Dimitrov spoke of the importance of last year’s salary increases for university lecturers and stressed the need for further support to modernize university facilities. He also called for expanding the national programme for student dormitory renovations, repairs, and furnishings.
