The town of Razgrad marked 147 years since its liberation from Ottoman rule on Tuesday. Official guests of the event included Vice President Iliana Iotova and National Assembly Deputy Chair Dragomir Stoynev.
In her address, Iotova said that memory cannot divide, it can only unite. "Our mission today is to be united and to thank those who sacrificed themselves, to bow deeply to them tonight and every night, every day. They didn't think of themselves - they wanted their people, they wanted to build a nation, a state, and that's what they bequeathed to us, that's what they gave to us. Today, if we are sincere to this testament and to their memory, we must move forward," Iotova noted.
National Assembly Deputy Chair Dragomir Stoynev said that freedom brought by the sacrifice of these great Bulgarians must be preserved and defended.
Razgrad Mayor Dobrin Dobrev said, "The grateful people of Razgrad will always honour this day and the feat of our liberators, will keep the memory of the Bulgarian volunteers and their heroism."
As part of the celebrations, a torchlight procession passed through the central part of the city. It was attended by representatives of the state and local authorities, various institutions, students and citizens. Vice President Yotova was among the participants. The procession ended in front of the mausoleum- ossuary, where the military icons were solemnly introduced and flowers and wreaths were laid. Dozens of citizens had come to Vazrazhdane Square, the place where in 1878 the population of Razgrad had welcomed their liberators.
