Atanas Zafirov was born on 29 September 1971 in Burgas, according to the parliament's website. He graduated in Bulgarian language and history from the University of Veliko Tarnovo. He also holds a master's degree in national security from the G.S. Rakovski Defence College in Sofia and a degree in finance from the Veliko Tarnovo University. He has qualifications in political science and political management from New Bulgarian University and the Bulgarian School of Politics, according to the BSP press centre.

Zafirov was a BSP MP in 2013-2017 and then after 2021. He was Chairman of the Defence Committee in the 46th and 47th National Assemblies, co-floor leader of the BSP-United Left parliamentary group in the current 51st National Assembly.

He has been BSP Deputy Chairman since 2020 and Acting Party Chairman since June 2024. He is the chairman of the BSP-United Left coalition.
