Speaking to reporters in Sofia on Friday, European Commissioner for Startups, Research and Innovation Ekaterina Zaharieva said that the EU Council's decision for Bulgaria's full membership in Schengen is fair and will improve the lives of Bulgarian citizens.

On Thursday, the EU Council decided that checks at the land Schengen borders of Bulgaria and Romania will be lifted as of January 1, 2025.

"I am extremely happy that it happened, belatedly, but [this is] really good news", Zaharieva said.

In Sofia, Zaharieva participated in the presentation of the annual survey of the Bulgarian Association of Software Companies on the situation and development of the software sector in Bulgaria.
