On this date in 1956, Bulgarian freestyle wrestler Nikola Stanchev became the first Olympic champion in the history of Bulgarians ports after winning a gold medal at the 1956 Summer Olympics, hosted by Melbourne, Australia  between November 22  and December 8, 1956. 

According to BTA's Reference Department, in addition to Stanchev's gold, Bulgarian wrestlers won three more silver medals, while this country's men's football team secured bronze, bringing the total number of medals to five.
