The Sofia City Court has permitted the issue of a European arrest warrant for former Bulgarian Development Bank (BDB) executive director Stoyan Mavrodiev. On November 11, the Sofia Prosecution Office asked the Court for the warrant.

In late August 2024, Mavrodiev was declared nationally wanted after being charged with major official embezzlement in connection with a loan of some BGN 150 million granted by the BDB to the Roadway Construction company. The other accused in the pre-trial proceedings were Roadway Construction owner Rumen Gaytanski (as instigator) and company representative Ivan Georgiev (as accessory).

According to the Sofia City Court, the crime in question is punishable by imprisonment. Also, there is a risk of the accused going into hiding or committing a crime. Therefore, the Court approved the request for a European arrest warrant.

Mavrodiev's ex officio defender was against the warrant.

The court decision is not final.
