Budgetary control MEPs endorsed Iliana Ivanova as a member of the European Court of Auditors (ECA) for Bulgaria in a secret ballot on Thursday. During her hearing in the European Parliament's Budgetary Control Committee, Ivanova stated that she has always worked honestly and independently of external influences.
Her nomination was backed unanimously by all 21 members participating in the vote.
Ivanova thanked the Bulgarian government for nominating her and for the trust to continue working on the more effective use of the EU budget. "I will continue to point out the shortcomings," added Ivanova.
She also noted that simplifying budget spending rules leads to fewer errors in managing EU funds. Ivanova said she will not take part in discussions or the preparation of ECA reports related to her work in the European Commission.
Iliana Ivanova is the current EU Commissioner for Innovation, Research, Culture, Education, and Youth. Holding a Master's degree in International Economic Relations, she previously served as Bulgaria's member of the ECA from 2013 to 2023.
The position of Bulgarian ECA member became vacant in September 2023 on Ivanova's appointment as EU Commissioner. On September 4, 2024, the Bulgarian Council of Ministers nominated her to return to the ECA for the 2025-2030 period.
The full Parliament is set to vote on her appointment for a new term at the ECA on November 26.
