There are feasible formulas for a future regular government, GERB leader Boyko Borissov said at a meeting with the party leadership on Tuesday. The meeting, livestreamed via Borissov’s Facebook profile, was attended by high-ranking GERB members Raya Nazaryan, Rosen Zhelyazkov, Tomislav Donchev, Denitsa Sacheva, Vladislav Goranov, Daniel Mitov, Yordanka Fandakova, Temenuzhka Petkova, Kostadin Angelov and Tsvetomir Paunov.

Borissov vowed that if a regular government is formed, it will exclude MRF-New Beginning, Vazrazhdane, ARF, and MECh. “Excluding these formations from a possible government does not mean that GERB does not respect them, but there needs to be a clear majority in Parliament,” he said, indicating that this remark was addressed specifically to Continue the Change – Democratic Bulgaria (CC-DB).

Borissov said GERB proposes him for prime minister because “this is the only way to have a government with a clear political responsibility.” He said he will resist external interference in the government. “What we agree about is what we will do,” he said.

Until consensus is reached on the new government, the National Assembly chair should be from GERB, the party which won the elections, but if a government majority emerges, the position of National Assembly chair will become negotiable, Borissov went on to say. In the meantime, the new legislature should have a regular leader to get things going, he added.

GERB plans to hold talks with CC-DB at a later point, because the coalition has drawn many red lines and GERB cannot accept many of its conditions, the former prime minister explained.

He also commented on a Constitutional Court case instituted on a petition by 67 members of the previous parliament challenging the lawfulness of electing MPs to the new legislature in 52 voting sections during the October 27 snap parliamentary elections. He noted that the 52 sections in question have not put a single MP into the new parliament.

Former National Assembly (parliament) chair Raya Nazaryan said at the meeting that a parliamentary resolution has been drafted to open a procedure for adopting rules for the election of members to the counter-corruption commission.

GERB-UDF will support the whistleblowers protection bill in the version that transposes EU law, Borissov said. It will also back the personal bankruptcy bill, which is important for honouring Bulgaria’s commitments under the Recovery and Resilience Plan.

On Wednesday, GERB-UDF will open negotiations with the parliamentary forces, beginning with BSP-United Left and There Is Such a People.
