There are three candidates for the position of constitutional judge from the Supreme Court of Cassation (SCC), the Court said Thursday. The three nominations were submitted within the statutory deadline, by the end of October 30.

On November 1, the General Assembly of judges of SCC and the Supreme Administrative Court will hold an election for a Constitutional Court judge.

The candidates are: Judge Evgeniy Staykov, SCC Vice President and Head of the Commercial Chamber; Judge Galina Toneva-Dacheva of the SCC Criminal Chamber; and Judge Svetlana Kalinova of the SCC Civil Chamber.

Under a gentlemen's agreement between the two Supreme Courts, this year's nominee from the judicial quota must come from the Supreme Court of Cassation.

The Constitutional Court's 12 judges are elected for a nine-year term. Four judges with an expired term are replaced every three years from the quotas of the President, Parliament and the General Assembly of the Supreme Courts.

The nine-year term of four Constitutional Court Judges expires on November 12. Two of them (Mariana Karagyozova and Filip Dimitrov) were appointed by President Rosen Plevneliev, one (Konstantin Penchev) was elected by Parliament and one (Tanya Raykovska) was elected from the judiciary quota.
