Women at leadership positions in Bulgaria are growing in number despite, shows a report on gender equality for 2023 that the Council of Ministers approved on Tuesday. Last year, the number stood at 68,000, which is by 3,200 more than in 2022. The share of women in management boards grew to 18.3% from 14.8% a year earlier.

In 2022, the difference in salaries between women and men was 13% in favour of men.

In 2023, the employment coefficient of women aged between 15 and 64 was 67.4%, compared to 73.9% for men. There was also a difference in the average pension, which was BGN 942 for men and BGN 765 for women. However, women received a pension for 27.6 years on average, by over 7 years more than men.

Last year, the average contributory income was BGN 1,445.55, and it was by 6.2% higher for men than for women.

The report reflects the results from the implementation of policies in five priority areas: gender equality on the labour market and equal level of economic independence; reduction of gender differences in salaries and incomes; promotion of equality in decision-making processes; fight against violence and protection and support of the victims; overcoming of gender stereotypes in various fields of public life and sexism.
