The Vazrazhdane party Friday joined the ranks of those opposed to the nomination of acting Prosecutor General Borislav Sarafov for a full tenure as this country's top prosecutor. In a statement on the matter, Vazrazhdane calls "considerably compromised" the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) that nominated Sarafov and highlights the information about Sarafov's contacts with Petar Petrov, a high-profile power broker in the Judiciary.
"On Thursday, a considerably compromised SJC with a long-expired term in office and without any moral right accepted the nomination and will vote on the sole candidate for prosecutor general, just like the same members of this SJC in 2019 voted [in favour of] Ivan Geshev, the self-proclaimed instrument of the Lord with a sad, premature end to his career as such [prosecutor general] at a time when he lost the support of his real lords from GERB and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms [MRF]. Borislav Sarafov, known for his contacts with Petar 'The Euro' Petrov, is the only nominee for prosecutor general. The nomination comes from three SJC members from the lobby of Delyan Peevski and the MRF," says Vazrazhdane.
"Today, even children know whom Borislav Sarafov serves, judging from the immediate arrests and accusations against Delyan Peevski's opponents," the position reads.
The statement further says, "Vazrazhdane is convinced that Sarafov does not have a place at the prosecution service of Bulgaria, let alone head it. A person who is being investigated for involvement in one of the biggest corruption scandals in the judicial system - Petar 'The Euro' Petrov, belongs in custody, and not in the prosecuting magistracy. A Supreme Judicial Council installed by the organized crime group of GERB and the MRF, working on call past its term in office and long after having lost respect within the judicial system and the legal circles, does not have the moral right to elect a prosecutor general."
According to Vazrazhdane, the election of a prosecutor general should interest every Bulgarian, because it determines whether the prosecution service "will be a bat or a means to seek justice based on the law, objectivity, impartially, and evidence." Vazrazhdane insists on the immediate stop of the procedure for electing Borislav Sarafov prosecutor general until new SJC members take office.
