site.btaKozloduy NPP New Builds, Westinghouse Electric Extend FEED Contract for Units 7 and 8

Kozloduy NPP New Builds PLC has signed an extension of a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) contract with Westinghouse Electric Company for building Units 7 and 8  using Westinghouse's AP1000 technology on the Kozloduy Nuclear Power Plant site in Northwestern Bulgaria, the Energy Ministry said Thursday.

Energy Minister Vladimir Malinov stressed: "The signing of the document is another important step in the implementation of what is for Bulgaria and the region a strategic project  for the construction of nuclear capacity."

The two companies' progress in implementing the design phase activities shows their full commitment to the project in line with the timeframe set by a National Assembly resolution of December 18, 2023.

Malinov said: "The construction of new capacity at the Kozloduy NPP site will ensure the long-term energy security of Bulgaria and Southeastern Europe. The implementation of the project will create high added value for the Bulgarian economy through the active participation of the local industry in all phases. One of the most significant projects in Europe will contribute significantly to the transition to a low carbon economy."

In June 2023, Westinghouse Electric Company signed a FEED contract with Kozloduy NPP New Builds PLC to assess Bulgarian industry and the existing infrastructure at the Kozloduy site for its potential to support the construction of two AP1000 reactors. After work per the agreement is completed, Westinghouse Electric is expected to provide engineering services for the design, licensing, project management and engineering utilization of the Kozloduy NPP site for the deployment of two new AP1000 Generation III+ reactors.

In early September, Malinov said he expected an engineering contract to be signed by the end of October between Kozloduy NPP New Builds and a consortium of Hyundai Engineering & Construction and Westinghouse Electric Company.
