Healthcare providers from Kanev University Hospital in Ruse treated large wounds using a 3D bioprinter and artificial intelligence (AI), Stela Krasteva from the public relations department of the medical institution told BTA.
The innovative procedure was performed in collaboration by a team from the Vascular Surgery Department, headed by Dr Stoyan Genadiev, and plastic surgeon Dr Stanimir Georgiev from the Surgery Department.
Two patients benefited from the free presentation manipulations with the equipment, which is available only at Sveti Georgi University Hospital in Plovdiv, South Central Bulgaria. They were cured after losing a large amount of tissue due to severe blockages of blood vessels.
The procedure had lipocytes extracted from the patient, which were then used to make an individual 3D bioprinted insert. After the wound was photographed, AI was used to determine the size and depth of the affected area as well as the amount of bioink needed by the bioprinter to make a custom bio-plate.
This procedure enables a safer and faster recovery.
The hospital in Ruse is confident that similar medical equipment should be available throughout the country, as it could benefit patients with various types of tissue disorders or lasting wounds.
