Caretaker Minister of Foreign Affairs, who is taking part in the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly in New York City between September 24 and 30, said that the UN Security Council must restore its credibility as the global body responsible for peace and security. Kondov spoke at the Leadership for Peace open debate, the Foreign Ministry press service reported on Thursday.
Kondov highlighted the crucial role of the elected members of the Council as bridges that promote unity, strengthen multilateralism and enhance its effectiveness.
The meeting, chaired by Slovenia as the rotating president of the UN Security Council for September, aimed at members of the Council and the entire UN to discuss how to restore the Council's credibility and to improve its functioning.
Kondov stated that Bulgaria remains committed to the norms and principles of international law and multilateralism as the best investment in strengthening and defending national sovereignty.
The Minister stressed that the most effective way to tackle the rising number of conflicts around the world and the disregard for the principles of the UN Charter is to build trust and strengthen leadership, protect the values of democracy and human rights and implement the Security Council resolutions and the decisions of international courts.
Kondov also took part in the meeting convened at the invitation of US President Joe Biden in support of Ukraine's reconstruction in the presence of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and other world leaders united by the determination to support Ukraine in achieving a comprehensive and lasting peace, as well as to assist the country in its rapid recovery thereafter.
