Young people took centre stage at the UN during the Action Days ahead of the Summit of the Future within the framework of the 79th Session of the UN General Assembly. The summit is an unprecedented opportunity for world leaders to address current and emerging global challenges and reform outdated international institutions, the UN on its website.
Young people from all over the world gathered in the hall of the UN General Assembly for the two Action Days before the summit, which starts on Sunday. Bulgaria will also be part of the event.
Felipe Paulier, the first-ever Assistant Secretary-General for Youth Affairs, described the Summit of the Future as a once-in-a-generation chance to transform the multilateral system, putting youth at its centre.
"Ten years ago, a day like today would have been unthinkable: a day on the official UN programme dedicated to youth," he said.
At the summit, leaders are expected to adopt a Pact for the Future, covering sustainable development and related financing, peace and security, science, technology and innovation.
The Global Digital Compact and the Declaration for Future Generations will be presented in an annex. The documents will cover proposals to reform the international financial structure and the UN Security Council, which were created some eight decades ago, at a time when many countries were still under colonial rule.
