Patriarch Daniil of Bulgaria Saturday broke ground for a church of the Holy Leaders of the Apostles St Peter and St Paul in the centre of Belogradchik in the presence of many local people and visitors.
Attending the event were Parliament's Deputy Chair Rositsa Kirova, Belogradchik Municipality Mayor Boyan Minkov, mayors of neighbouring municipalities, members of the church board of trustees and donors.
"To build a temple dedicated to God is a great deed indeed," Patriarch Daniil said in his address. "First of all, the Lord Jesus Christ by his incarnation showed us that we as human beings should be a temple of God. Jesus said 'I am the way and the truth and the life.' Our earthly life has no other meaning than to follow the example of the Lord Jesus Christ," the head of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church noted.
"The church is a special place of God's presence. By means of the Eucharist and the hallowed gifts He has decreed us to contribute, He is present here. God is everywhere, but mostly where one responds. God cannot be present in the absence of faith. Without God's mercy we are too weak to do good," the Patriarch said.
A copy of the miracle-working icon of St George Zographou from the eponymous Bulgarian monastery on Mount Athos was welcomed after the ceremony. It was taken to the church of St George with a litya procession and will remain there for the benefit and veneration of locals and visitors of Belogradchik.
