Attending a ceremony on the 60th anniversary of the declaration of Radnevo as a town, President Rumen Radev said Saturday that he has committed to do everything possible to protect the Bulgarian coal-fired power plants before state and European institutions in order to prolong the plants' operation as long as possible.

"I am convinced that with its great deal of capital, especially highly trained professionals, energy specialists and traditions, Radnevo deserves and should remain Bulgaria’s energy heart," the head of State said.

"Of course, this should be done by gradually introducing new, modern technologies that will make the transition to decarbonization, but also with the clear condition of providing jobs and prospects for the region," Radev explained.

In the President’s words, it is time that Bulgarians understand that electricity production means much more than prosperity and security for the people of Radnevo. According to him, electricity production underpins the security and prosperity of Bulgaria as a whole.

According to Radev, the energy crisis has shown very clearly how important it is for each country to have its own energy resources and its own technologies for their production, as well as highly trained energy workers.
