A waste transfer station will be built in Taraclia, populated predominantly by Bulgarian population. A sorting and composting station will be built in the city of Cahul (about 49 km from Taraclia). The existing landfill in Cahul will be closed, and a new landfill will be built in its place. In addition to Taraclia, transfer stations will also be built in Comrat and one other city in the south of Moldova.
All this will be implemented with the support of a grant of EUR 4.34 million provided by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development. On Wednesday, the Moldovan government approved the signing of the agreement, IPN reports.
The agreement aims to ensure the implementation of the Solid Waste in Moldova project, which envisages the development of appropriate infrastructure in the three waste management regions under Moldova’s Solid Waste Management Strategy. The program targets the southern regions of Cahul, Cantemir, Taraclia, as well as Vulcanesti, Ceadar-Lunga and Comrat of Gagauzia. In this region, equipment and machinery for transport, sorting, processing and composting, including waste containers, containers and means of transport, will be purchased.
“It is a nationwide project whose purpose is to create a sustainable solid waste recycling system, substantially reducing the impact on the environment and contributing significantly to improving the quality of life of citizens and developing a cleaner and healthier environment in Moldova,” Minister of Environment Sergiu Lazarencu stated in the Cabinet’s meeting.
