Bulgarian Deputy Foreign Minister Mariya Angelieva conferred with International Telecommunication Union (ITU) Deputy Secretary-General Tomas Lamanauskas, Angelieva’s ministry said in a press release on Tuesday. Lamanauskas is on an official visit to Bulgaria to attend a meeting of the Committee for ITU Policy (Com-ITU) with the European Conference of Postal and Telecommunication Administrations (CEPT) hosted by Bulgaria’s Transport and Communications Ministry.
Lamanauskas briefed Angelieva on the details surrounding the Com-ITU meeting. The ITU Deputy Secretary-General praised Bulgaria's participation in the work of the ITU, including in the framework of Bulgaria's current membership in one of its governing bodies - the ITU Council. He also underlined Bulgaria’s significant role in the transformational processes of ITU governance. On behalf of the ITU, Lamanauskas expressed special gratitude to the Bulgarian government for its decision to provide assistance for reconstructing Ukraine’s telecommunications infrastructure that was damaged by Russia. Bulgaria made a voluntary contribution to the ITU Special Trust Fund for Ukraine.
Ms. Angelieva expressed her satisfaction with the visit of the ITU representative in Bulgaria. She confirmed that it is important for Bulgaria to participate in ITU activities.
The two sides also discussed the preparations for upcoming events such as the Summit of the Future (September 22-23, 2024, New York), the 29th Session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29, November 11-22, 2024, Baku), and the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly (WTSA-24, October 15-24, 2024, New Delhi).
