The Municipal Council of the town of General Toshevo supported a declaration against the construction of wind power plants on fertile land on the territory of the municipality, the local administration said on its website on Thursday.

The decision has been prompted by misinformation in news and social media, including false reports on investment intentions for construction of wind power plants in the municipality.

The municipal councillors declared their support for local people and branch organizations from various sectors that have objected to the possible construction of wind power plants in General Toshevo.

The declaration said the stated investment intentions are contrary to the principles laid down in a long-term programme of the municipality promoting the use of energy from renewable sources and biofuel in 2021-2031.

The Municipal Council of Dobrich Municipality Wednesday decided to hold an extraordinary meeting on September 4 to put to the vote a local referendum on the construction of wind power plants.

Mayor Sonia Georgieva said she was late in submitting the proposal as she was waiting for the President to schedule parliamentary elections, so that the referendum can be held on the same date. She added that only through a referendum will the residents of the largest municipality in Dobrich Region be able to protect their land or give permission for the construction of energy parks.

She also said that the municipality has received threats that municipal funding will be halted unless changes in the detailed development plans are approved or if construction permits are delayed. "If this goes on, I will notify the Prosecutor General and the caretaker Prime Minister," said Georgieva.

General Toshevo and Dobrich Municipalities are part of Dobrich Region in Southern Dobrudzha, known as "Bulgaria's breadbasket". The region boasts the country's highest percentage of cultivated land. Plant-growing and stock-breeding are the most important sectors of the regional economy.
