The Maritza River in the Turkish Province of Edirne, bordering Bulgaria, has experienced a significant drop in water levels, Turkish news media said on Monday.

Hurriyet Daily News said that the drop in water levels is due to extremely high temperatures in recent days and low rainfall.

The waters of the Maritza River are used to irrigate agricultural areas in the region, including rice fields.

To deal with the water shortage, authorities have set a schedule to turn off river water pumps on certain days.

This comes after local officials met at the city hall to discuss and solve the water shortage problem.
