Addressing the 61st session of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), Sofia Mayor Vassil Terziev said that one of his team’s ambitious goals is for Sofia to be a net-zero emissions city by 2030. Sofia is hosting the forum, which opened on Saturday and runs until August 2.

According to Terziev, for Sofia to be a green city, cooperation, innovation and environmental management are needed. He said Sofia is already taking steps in this direction and mentioned the opportunities for technological development, giving the example of the Institute for Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence and Technology (INSAIT).

“Our vision is clear - to turn the capital into a sustainable and green place that can be an example for other cities in the country,” Terziev further commented. He described as a complex process the preparation for adaptation to changing climatic conditions. According to him, it is more complicated as a process, especially in densely populated cities. “Our approaches need to be careful and consider the connectivity of the biosphere, urban elements and social and economic needs. To meet the challenge, we need science. My faith in science is enormous. That is why I am happy that the city is hosting the 61st session of the IPCC,” he added.

In his speech Terziev pointed out that Sofia is proud to be part of an international community that, working together, can create a world where economic growth and environmental protection can go hand in hand.
