All firing at the Novo Selo Training Area has been suspended to avoid the risk of fires, the Sliven Regional Administration’s press centre said on Monday.
The Regional Administration hosted a meeting addressing fire-fighting measures to be employed at the training area during firing and other exercises. The meeting was attended by Regional Governor Chavdar Bozhurski, Deputy Commander of the Novo Selo Training Area Pavel Gigov, the Director of the Fire Safety and Civil Protection Regional Directorate, Commissioner Dencho Chomakov, and the Director of the Territorial Directorate of the State Agency for National Security, Stoyan Dimitrov.
The issue was brought up during an extraordinary meeting called by the Regional Governor on Friday in connection with the high-risk fire warnings.
Gigov briefed Bozhurski on an established emergency response organization. The situation in Novo Selo is currently under control. Firebreaks are being established inside and around the entire training area. This will limit the spread of fire in case of incidents and help to suppress it faster.
The preventive measures are hampered by a shortage of equipment and fuel. Operational options for their provision at short notice with the assistance of the government were also discussed at the meeting, the Sliven Regional Administration added.
Some 30 hectares at the Novo Selo Training Area were engulfed by a fire in 2022.
