The Sofia University of St. Kliment Ohridski is hosting an international conference of the European Association for Biblical Studies. The event opened in the Rector's Auditorium on Monday. It will be on until July 18.

More than 400 scholars from over 40 countries are participating in the conference, Sofia University rector Prof. Dr. Georgi Valchev told BTA.

This forum brings together the best scholars in the field of biblical studies from all over the world. "There are participants from all continents, which is a big recognition of the achievements of our colleagues working in this research field. This is an honour for Bulgaria, as well as for Sofia University. I hope that in their short stay the colleagues from other countries, most of them coming to Bulgaria for the first time, will have the opportunity to experience at least a small part of our cultural heritage," said Dr. Valchev.

He said that among the participants are also representatives of the Sofia University Faculties of Slav Philologies, of Classical and New Philologies, of History and of Theology, as well as of universities from all over the country.

He thanked the Sofia University partners from the Sofia City Hall, the National Library, the Christian art branch of the National Art Gallery, the National Classical School of Ancient Languages and Cultures, and the University Library, which is preparing an exhibition, The Bible and its Explorers, which opens Tuesday at 1:30 pm.

In his address to the participants of the forum, Prof. Dr. Anna Maria Totomanova, Chairperson of the Organizing Committee of the international conference, said that the conference has a busy agenda. A number of scientific papers will be presented over several days, addressing issues in biblical studies. Simultaneously, visitors will have the opportunity to attend exhibitions on the same topic, she explained.
