Representatives of the Bulgarian Antarctic Base and Research Vessel Consortium have conferred with a delegation from Germany on board the Bulgarian naval research vessel Sv. Sv. Kiril i Metodii (RSV 421) in the Black Sea city of Varna, the Bulgarian Antarctic Institute’s (BAI) press centre said.
The German delegation was represented by Felix Lauber, commander of the Polarstern polar research vessel, European Polar Board Chair Nicole Biebow, and Germany’s Ambassador to Bulgaria Irene Plank.
The sides discussed opportunities for future cooperation between Germany’s Alfred Wegener Institute and the Bulgarian Polar Research Programme, including polar research, the exchange of scientists and support from Germany for the use of advanced oceanographic equipment on board RSV 421. The equipment will enable the implementation of scientific projects in the Antarctic ice shelf area, BAI added.
