site.btaGoethe-Institut Showcases German Films in Outdoor Screening

The Goethe-Institut will present four contemporary German feature films in an outdoor screening at its premises in Sofia, event organizers announced on Tuesday. The selection will focus on themes such as adolescent issues, relationships among people in their 30s, aggression, and human rights.

Organizers said that all the films share the common theme of being set partly or entirely in Berlin. The selected titles are by representatives of the new generation of German filmmakers, with the films from Hoffkino 2024 produced between 2020 and 2023. Admission is free.

JULY 11 – KOKON, 2020

Director and screenwriter Leonie Krippendorff was born in Berlin in 1985. From 2009 to 2016, she studied directing at the Konrad Wolf Academy for Film and Television in Potsdam. Her graduation film, Looping, received numerous nominations and awards at both national and international film festivals. In February 2018, she participated in the Berlinale Screenwriting Talent Forum with her debut film, Kokon.

JULY 18 – ALLE REDEN ÜBERS WETTER

Director Annika Pinske, born in 1982, grew up in Frankfurt an der Oder. She studied philosophy and literature at Humboldt University in Berlin and the University of Potsdam. In 2011, she began studying directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. Her first short film, Spielt keine Rolle, was nominated for the German Short Film Award in 2015. Her feature debut, Alle reden übers Wetter, had its world premiere at the 2022 Berlin International Film Festival and was nominated for the Best First Film Award. The film is currently touring festivals worldwide.

AUGUST 22 – NICO

Born in 1984 in Hahn, North Rhine-Westphalia, filmmaker Eline Goering began her career as a camera operator and editor at German news broadcasters in Paris, Prague, Kiev, and Berlin. She also worked for Deutsche Welle in Cairo. Between 2009 and 2010, she produced several short films and documentaries for NGOs in South Africa. Upon returning to Germany, she made a short film in 2014 and simultaneously began studying directing at the German Film and Television Academy in Berlin. Nico is her feature film debut.

AUGUST 28 – SONNE UND BETON

Sonne und Beton is an adaptation of the bestselling novel of the same name by comedian and Gemischtes Hack podcast host Felix Lobrecht. Film director David Wnendt, born in 1977 in Gelsenkirchen, grew up as the son of a diplomat in Islamabad, Miami, Brussels, and Meckenheim in the Rhineland. He graduated in 2004 with an MBA and journalism from Freie Universität Berlin. From 2004 to 2011, Wendt studied directing at the Konrad Wolf Academy of Film and Television Arts in Potsdam. His award-winning film satire about Hitler, Er ist wieder da, was released in cinemas in 2013. Sonne und Beton is his fourth feature film.
