Addressing the second panel of the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Bolhrad, Ukraine, on Thursday, BTA Director General Kiril Valchev said that the press has a role to play in providing more information and support so that the Bolhrad High School can preserve the knowledge about their mother tongue and their roots.

The second panel is taking place at the Bolhrad school of Georgi Rakovski. It is titled "Knowing One's Ancestry and Mother Tongue in Bulgarian Media".

Valchev pointed out that the Rakovski School is 11 years older than the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (whose anniversary was observed by the participants in the 19th World Meeting on Tuesday). He went on to catalogue several Bulgarian historical figures who came to study in this school: Prime Minister Alexander Mailov (1931 – 1934), politician and lawyer Dimitar Grekov (1847 - 1901), revolutionary Angel Kanchev (1850 - 1872) and Academician Alexander Balan (1859 - 1959).

Valchev went on to say that this school needs teachers and the news media can spread the world of upcoming competitions for teaching tenures.

He suggested that private donors and the Bulgarian State can help organize summer camps for students from the Bolhrad high school so that they can improve their Bulgarian language, get to know Bulgaria, its history and its sights. "The news media can help by asking more frequently questions about such camps," Valchev said.

In her remarks, school principal Snezhana Skoric called Bolhrad "the capital of Bessarabian Bulgarians and Bulgarians in Ukraine".

She said that the school's best performing students have an opportunity to study in Bulgarian universities without having to sit for admission exams. This year two girls received such an offer from Bulgarian universities.

Bolhrad Mayor Sergey Dimitriev, who was among the official guests on the second day of the 19th World Meeting, thanked the organizers and wished the forum fruitful work.

BTA organizes the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Odesa, Bolhrad and Izmail (Ukraine) from June 18 until June 21, 2024 with the assistance of Aurubis Bulgaria, A1 Bulgaria, Glavbolgarstroy Holding, Euroins Insurance Group, SOF Connect - the operator of Sofia Airport, 13 Centuries Bulgaria National Endowment Fund.
