The Chair of the Council for Electronic Media (CEM), Gabriela Naplatanova, spoke on Wednesday at the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media at the BTA National Press Club in Odesa, Ukraine. She emphasized the critical role of journalists in fostering open communication and bridging divides between people with opposing views, especially in an era dominated by social media.

Naplatanova, drawing on her extensive experience as a journalist in various conflict zones, expressed that she never hesitated to cover major events firsthand. She highlighted that unlike her, Ukrainian journalists and the Bulgarian community in Ukraine do not have the luxury of choice in this matter.

"It is extremely important to me that the Bulgarian media know that CEM has been monitoring the coverage of Russia's war against Ukraine from the very beginning," Naplatanova said. Naplatanova further noted that CEM has escalated its scrutiny of how Bulgarian media reports on Russia's conflict in Ukraine. This enhanced monitoring will enable a detailed analysis and subsequent conclusions.

“Bulgarian media must continue to report on these events with objectivity, precision, seriousness, and professionalism, providing full context through factual data," Naplatanova said. She added that it was time to give due credit to professional, prepared journalism.

BTA is organizing the 19th World Meeting of Bulgarian Media in Odesa, Bolhrad, and Izmail, Ukraine, from June 18 to June 21, 2024. The event is taking place with the support of Aurubis Bulgaria, A1 Bulgaria, Glavbolgarstroy Holding AD, Euroins Insurance Group, Postbank, SOF Connect, and the 13 Centuries of Bulgaria National Endowment Fund.
