site.btaInterior Minister Stoyanov on His Job Plans, Illegal Migration, New Personal Documents

Asked by reporters whether he has been asked to stay on in office, Bulgarian Interior Minister Kalin Stoyanov said that, for the time being, he has not been approached with such a proposal and has not talked to anybody. If he receives such a proposal, Stoyanov and his team are ready to complete the quite a few things they have started.

The caretaker minister said that Bulgaria has an enormous need of a stable regular government to carry on the implementation of the priority national policies.

The situation with illegal migration is exceedingly calm, Stoyanov said further. The Border Police reports a 73% decrease in illegal migration since the beginning of the year compared to the same period of 2023,

In the Interior Minister's words, the Bulgarian border is guarded properly and this will be a key determining factor for the country's admission into the land-border Schengen area until the end of this year. 

Stoyanov talked to the media as he was issued the first new-generation identity card. The issuing of the personal documents began on Monday.

He said that the new personal documents have many and more reliable security features and for the first time integrate both hands' fingerprints. They will make possible the so-called electronic identification after awhile, too.

Stoyanov added that the fees charged for issuing the new personal documents will be unchanged until the end of 2024 but will be adjusted next year.

The caretaker Interior Minister added that people can use their old personal documents and are not obliged to obtain news ones at this stage.
