The unified team of Special Olympics Bulgaria won the gold in the first edition of European Women's Unified Basketball Tournament, organized here by Special Olympics Serbia, the Serbian Sports Ministry, and Zrenjanin Municipality with the support of Special Olympics Europe/Eurasia. Bulgaria, which participated for the first time with a women's unified basketball team, snagged the gold in its division by defeating Special Olympics Bosnia and Herzegovina 9-6.
The tournament aims to promote the development of basketball for women with intellectual disabilities. Eight teams competed for the gold in their division: Special Olympics Bulgaria, Serbia, Serbia 2, Montenegro, Portugal, Romania, Lithuania, and Bosnia and Herzegovina.
The Bulgarian team comprises four athletes with intellectual disabilities and three partners without such, thus achieving social integration through sport.
