"We condemn this act of aggression and wish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen a speedy recovery," the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) said in a Saturday statement on the social network X in connection with Friday's attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen. Frederiksen was attacked in a square in the centre of Copenhagen. A suspect has been arrested in the case and the motives for the act remain unknown.
"We are deeply shocked by the attack on Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen," the Foreign Ministry's statement added.
Frederiksen was rushed to hospital for minor injuries sustained from the blow in Friday's incident, when a man attacked her in the centre of Copenhagen, DPA reported, citing a statement from her office. Frederiksen is "safe but in shock" over what happened yesterday [Friday], the Danish Prime Minister's office said, adding that all her engagements scheduled for Saturday had been cancelled.
The 39-year-old assailant, who was quickly arrested by police, is due to appear later on Saturday for a preliminary hearing at Copenhagen District Court. Details of what happened at Kultorvet Square in the historic centre of the Danish capital have not yet been released, nor have the suspect's motives. Witnesses told local media that Denmark's 46-year-old prime minister managed to walk away from the scene.
