Bulgaria’s territory has shrunk in two years, according to data of the National Statistical Institute, published on Friday. As of 31 December 2023, Bulgaria’s territory, computed by the National Statistical Institute using the digital models of the cadastral map of the country, is 110, 996.76 sq. km.

In 2022, Bulgaria’s territory was 110, 996.84 sq.km.

According to the types of durable land use (specific purpose of use) of the land properties, the largest area is occupied by agricultural areas - 54.5% and forest areas - 33.3% of the total area of the country. Urbanized areas cover nearly 5, 279.4 sq. km or 4.8% of the country's territory.

By December 31, agricultural areas accounted for 54.60%, and forest areas for 33.13%. Urbanized areas covered 5,133.2 sq.km., or 4.62% of the country’s territory.
