Retail trade in European Union (EU) countries in April 2024 contracted by 0.6% compared to March, while in eurozone countries it fell by 0.5%, according to seasonally adjusted data released on Thursday by the European statistical office Eurostat.
Economists had expected a monthly decline of 0.3% in eurozone retail trade in April this year, the DPA said.
In March, there was an increase compared to the previous month - in the European Union by 0.6%, and in the euro area the rise was 0.7%.
Compared to April 2023, calendar-adjusted retail trade volume decreased by 0.1% across the EU and remained unchanged in the eurozone.
In Bulgaria, April 2024 retail trade is reported to have increased by 9.8% on an annual basis compared to the same month in 2023. In March, annual growth of 0.4% was recorded.
On a monthly basis (compared to March 2024), retail trade growth in Bulgaria is 1.9%, Eurostat data shows.
