site.bta200 Kg of Mercury, Other Toxic Chemicals Found in Warehouse in Pernik
A large amount of mercury was found in Pernik, the Pernik Regional Prosecution Service reported on Wednesday. Some 150 kilograms of the highly toxic metal were being stored in a warehouse used by a private company, while another 50 kilograms were found outside the building. Other hazardous materials in the warehouse included acids and bases.
Hristofor Rachev, a spokesperson for the prosecution service, said that the prosecution service received materials from a joint inspection carried out by the State Agency for National Security and the Pernik Regional Directorate of the Interior Ministry. The report suggested that chemicals in the warehouse were improperly stored. Pre-trial proceedings have been initiated. The National Investigation Service is working on the case.
The warehouse has been secured and sealed, Regional Prosecutor Gergana Malinovska said and added that the public should safety has been secured.
