Sofia has joined the Pact of Free Cities, the Sofia Town Hall said on its website on Tuesday.

„I believe that the membership will allow us to cooperate more efficiently, exchange good practices and find common solutions to key problems,” said Sofia Deputy Mayor Nikoal Barbutov during a summit of the Pact of Free Cities in Bratislava. „Together we can build stronger, more sustainable and more democratic cities, where all citizens will feel valued and included “, added Barbutov.

Attending were the mayors of Bratsilava Matus Vallo, of Budapest Gergely Karacsony, of Lviv Andriy Sadovy, of Gdansk Aleksandra Dulkiewicz, of Warsaw Rafal Trzaskowski and of Tirana Erion Veliaj.

On the agenda were the future of cities, the role of cities in the fight for democracy and the inclusion of citizens, common measures for coping with propaganda and fake news, the fight against populism, division and hatred.

The Pact of Free Cities was founded by the mayors of Bratislava, Budapest, Prague and Warsaw in 2019. It is currently an informal alliance of mayors of more than 30 European cities, determined to stand up for progressive values and fight against nationalistic populism.
