On April 21, Bulgarian Marieta Georgieva became the third Bulgarian woman to climb Mount Everest (8,848m). Georgieva was part of an organized expedition with Elite Exped, who confirmed on their Facebook page that she was one of 29 people to reach the summit.
The group, led by a team of local and international mountaineers, included a total of 31 members, two of whom reached Mount Lhotse and the rest went on to climb Mount Everest.
Elite Exped provides organized expeditions to Mount Everest and is headed by Guinness record breaking mountaineers Nimsdai Purja MBE, Mingma David Sherpa, and Mingma Tenzi Sherpa.
In 2022, Bulgarian climber Silvia Azdreeva was on a team which scaled Everest and Lhotse, also organized by Elite Exped, and became the second Bulgarian woman to climb Everest after Petya Kolcheva in 2009.
Georgieva is the 16th Bulgarian to climb Everest. A day prior to her achievement, on April 20, was the 40th anniversary of the first Bulgarian in history to climb the summit, Hristo Prodanov.
