Twenty-two Bulgarian beaches and one yacht marina were awarded a Blue Flag label at a ceremony in the Albena seaside resort. Of the three blue flagged beaches in the Dobrich region, two are on the territory of the municipality of Balchik and one in the municipality of Kavarna. The chairman of the Blue Flag Movement for Bulgaria, Stanimir Dimitrov, said during the ceremony that the decision for 23 sites in Bulgaria to receive the award was taken by an international jury in Copenhagen. There are blue flags along the entire Bulgarian coast. Most sites awarded this year a Blue Flag are on the territory of the municipality of Nessebar.

The award itself is the most established eco-label and standard in tourism, which is awarded to beaches and marinas around the world. To deserve the Blue Flag, beaches and marinas must meet a number of criteria related to sea water quality, environmental information and environmental education, safety, services and amenities. The participation is voluntary and depends mainly on the initiative and ambition of the concessionaires of beaches, Dimitrov explained.

The Bulgarian beaches that receive a Blue Flag are Arkutino, "Dunes-South, Dunes, Harmanite, Sozopol-Centra", Camping Chernomorets, Pomorie-Eas", Nessebar-South, Sunny Beach-South, Sunny Beach-Central, Sunny Beach-North, Sveti Vlas-Central, Sveti Vlas-Iztok, Obzor-Central, Byala-South, Chalet "Chernomorets" hut, Sunny Day, Golden Sands, Kranevo-North, Albena, the White Lagoon.
