Labour inspectors carried out 1,031 inspections of construction sites within the framework of a campaign organized in April with the resumption of construction works, the General Labor Inspectorate said on Tuesday. In order to ensure more effective controls, inspectors from other areas were sent to Sofia, where construction is most large-scale.

During the campaign, 1,066 construction businesses were inspected. The number of violations is 5,063. Of these, those related to health and safety at work are 3,811, and those related to the implementation of employment are 1,224. The inspections found 184 workers working without an employment contract. Labour inspectors closed 141 sites to prevent serious accidents at work, and save lives.

24 workers were suspended during the campaign and 30 workers were fined, because they did not comply with the rules for safe work, including not using the personal protective equipment provided to them.

Some 438 acts of violations were issued to employers who have committed violations of labor legislation. Construction has been identified as one of the riskiest sectors both in terms of occupational safety and health and undeclared work.

In 2023, the General Labour Inspectorate carried out 6,583 inspections in construction. There were 33,441 violations, of which 10,625 related to employment. The number of cases of work without an employment contract was 972. The violations in ensuring healthy and safe working conditions were 22,710.

During the inspections, 68 foreigners were found working on construction sites without a permit or illegally.
