site.btaBulgaria Observes International AIDS Candlelight Memorial
On Sunday, Bulgaria observes International AIDS Candlelight Memorial to show solidarity with those affected by HIV/AIDS, the Health Ministry said in a press release. This year's edition is themed, “Together we remember, together we heal, through love and solidarity!”
International AIDS Candlelight Memorial has been observed globally on the third Sunday of May since 1983. In Bulgaria, this day has been commemorated since 1992. The goal is to honour the memory of those who lost their lives to HIV/AIDS as well so show support for their families and those living with HIV.
From 8 pm to 9 pm on Sunday, all 27 regional capitals in Bulgaria will hold a candlelight memorial. Tealights will be lit in key locations to form a ribbon, symbolizing the fight with HIV/AIDS. The candles will be provided by the regional health inspectorates to everyone wishing to join the initiative. Citizens can also express solidarity by lighting a candle at home and placing it on a windowsill at 9 pm.
Over 4,200 Bulgarians were HIV carriers as at December 2023, data show. The Health Ministry provides free testing and antiretroviral therapy to all people with HIV/AIDS, regardless of their health status.
