The Sofia Prison Thursday held a boxing tournament for inmates. It was the 12th edition of the tournament. It drew over 30 entrants from prisons all over the country.
To qualify for the tournament, inmates are required to have shown good discipline and have a good record during their time behind bars.
In the audience were caretaker Justice Minister Maria Pavlova, the head of DG Implementation of Penal Sanctions, Ivaylo Yordanov, and Sofia Prison Director Vassil Gordev.
As she presented a medal to the winner in the first bout, Alexander Kurtev, the Justice Minister spoke about the effect of such activities for lowering the levels of aggression and greater socialization.
In the audience was also Bulgarian boxing star Tervel Pulev. He spoke to the inmates about the difference between bouts as those on Thursday and street fights. "There is a clear line between street fight and sport. Here we have rules and referees, and everybody learns to respect the opponent and observe the rules," he said.
