A Bulgarian man tried to illegally import 9.9 million cigarettes (495,000 packs) worth more than 13.6 million RON (5.44 million BGN) into Romania through the Turnu Magurele border CHECKPOINT, reported the Romanian Border Police on its official website on Tuesday.
The undeclared goods were loaded in a truck traveling on the Turkiye-Poland route. The truck driver did not present a document on the origin of the cigarettes.
On May 12, customs inspectors, together with border police officers, carried out several specific checks, based on a risk analysis. As a result of these inspections, they found an impressive amount of undeclared cigarettes, without an excise label, in a truck with Bulgarian registration. The truck was driven by a Bulgarian citizen. He claimed that he is an employee of a transport company and did not know about the cigarettes, the published information indicated.
The truck and the discovered goods were taken to the headquarters of the Border Police. The cigarettes were confiscated. Border police have launched an investigation.
