The Bulgarian State Railways (BDZ) has raised train fares as of Tuesday due to a dramatic increase in the company's expenses over the past few years, the BDZ press centre said.

Train fares increase by 20% on average, depending on the type of transport document. A ticket for a second-class round trip from Sofia to Burgas and back, for example, now costs BGN 36.70 instead of BGN 30.70. The first-class round-trip ticket for the same itinerary has increased to BGN 46 from BGN 38.40.

Fares for sleepers and couchettes are also updated. There is also an increase in the Classic and Youth passes, which entitle their holders to a 50% reduction on the fare for unlimited second-class travel on passenger and express trains for one year from the date of issue.

The prices of the Child, Student, Family, Disabled, and Adult rail passes remain unchanged at BGN 1.

Children up to the age of seven will travel free of charge if a document certifying their age is presented.

The national railway carrier has not changed its fares since the beginning of 2012, except for a 1.8% indexation in 2020, the company recalled.
